Adoption and Implementation

The Constitution was adopted on 26th November 1949 and came into effect on 26th January 1950.

Significance of the Constitution

Need for a Constitution

After independence, India needed a legal framework to establish unity, equality, and governance in a diverse society.

Formation of the Constituent Assembly

The first meeting took place on 9th December 1946 with 389 members, later reduced to 299 after partition.

Drafting Committee and Leadership

Formed on 29th August 1947, under the leadership of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. Took 2 years, 11 months, and 18 days to draft the Constitution
