Nanda was actively involved in the Non-Cooperation Movement and was jailed for participating in civil disobedience against British rule.
Nanda served as the Acting Prime Minister of India twice, first after the death of Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964 and then after Lal Bahadur Shastri's demise in 1966.
