Voting is done by the MLAs of the states in Rajya Sabha elections.

Voting Process

This election is not a secret ballot and neither is EVM used.

Votes required for victory

The votes required for victory are pre-decided, which are based on the total number of MLAs and the number of Rajya Sabha seats.

Formula

Total number of MLAs x 100 / (Rajya Sabha seats + 1) + 1

Allocation of seats

Rajya Sabha seats are allocated on the basis of the population of the state. Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of seats, 31.

Tenure

Rajya Sabha is a permanent house, in which the tenure of a member is 6 years. One third of the members retire every two years.

Total seats

Rajya Sabha has a total of 245 seats, out of which 233 seats are elected and 12 members are nominated by the President.
